THE FORMULA

How the calculation works

Net gain = gross monetary return - total investment cost. Simple ROI = net gain / total investment cost × 100. Return multiple = gross return / investment cost.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE

A calculation you can check.

An investment costing $5,000 that returns $7,500 creates a $2,500 net gain. Simple ROI is 50% and the gross return multiple is 1.5 times the original cost.

When to use this calculator

Use this simple ROI calculator to compare a project cost with its attributable monetary return. Define a measurement period and include all costs you intend to measure in the investment amount. Gross return means the money returned before subtracting that entered investment; if you already have net gain, add the investment back before using this field. Document what you included so a later comparison uses the same basis.

Assumptions and limits

This is not an annualized return calculation. Two projects with the same simple ROI but different durations are not equivalent. The model does not adjust for the timing of cash flows, financing, taxes, or risk. Revenue attributed to marketing is also not automatically profit; account for delivery costs before using ROI to judge business value.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Before you use the result.

Can ROI be negative?

Yes. When gross return is smaller than the entered cost, net gain and ROI are negative.

Is this annualized ROI?

No. The result covers whatever measurement period your inputs represent, without time adjustment.

Is ROI the same as ROAS?

No. ROAS generally compares attributed advertising revenue with ad spend. ROI uses gain after the costs included in your investment definition.
