THE FORMULA

How the calculation works

Contribution per unit = price - variable cost. Break-even units = fixed costs / contribution per unit, rounded up. Revenue = whole units × price.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE

A calculation you can check.

With $3,000 in monthly fixed costs, a $1,500 selling price and $900 variable cost, each job contributes $600. Five jobs cover fixed costs and produce $7,500 in revenue.

When to use this calculator

Use the break-even calculator to translate overhead into a sales-volume target. Choose a period first, then enter only the fixed costs for that period. Use the variable delivery cost for one representative job or unit. The rounded result is the minimum whole-unit volume in this simplified model. Compare that workload with your delivery capacity before treating it as an achievable plan.

Assumptions and limits

The calculation assumes a stable price, unit cost, and product mix. If you sell several services with different margins, model them separately or use a carefully weighted average. Break-even profit does not mean break-even cash flow: invoices, deposits, loan payments, and supplier terms can move cash into a different period.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Before you use the result.

Why must price exceed variable cost?

A positive contribution is needed to cover fixed costs. If each additional sale loses money or contributes nothing, a finite break-even volume cannot be calculated here.

Why round the result up?

You generally cannot sell a fraction of a job or physical unit. Rounding up ensures the whole-unit target covers the entered fixed costs.

Can I calculate annual break-even?

Yes. Enter annual fixed costs and use consistent unit pricing and variable costs. Do not mix annual overhead with a monthly target.
